"I
like to figure out the way things
work...Pulmonary medicine is very much
based on knowing how the respiratory
system works so that once something does
go wrong, it is usually clear to me what
the approaches are that will fix it. In
addition, there is opportunity and
privilege to care for a vast variety of
illnesses running the gamut, such as
treating the sickest patient
being maintained on life support
in the intensive
care unit, counseling an out patient on
smoking cessation, or treating a flare
of asthma. This diversity is part of the
constant challenge of what I do.
My most important pulmonary advice for
laypersons concerns smoking. The good
news is that no one is too old to stop
smoking and it is never too late to stop
smoking. The bad news is that failure to
stop smoking may lower the quality of
your life and/or shorten your lifespan."
